Mokwa, Nigeria — A devastating flood that struck the town of Mokwa in central Nigeria has resulted in over 200 confirmed fatalities, with an additional 500 individuals reported missing, according to local officials. The disaster follows torrential rains, described as the most severe in the region in six decades, which swept through neighborhoods, leaving destruction in their wake.
Mokwa’s district head, Muhammadu Aliyu, stated that rescue operations have been halted as officials believe that further survivors are unlikely to be found. The flooding has particularly impacted the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa districts, where many residents witnessed their homes and loved ones being swept away.
Survivors have shared harrowing accounts of the disaster. Adamu Yusuf recounted the traumatic loss of his wife and newborn baby, revealing that he only survived because he could swim. Another local, Saliu Sulaiman, lamented the financial toll of the flooding, noting a loss of approximately $1,500, which represented earnings from his farm produce sold the day before the floods struck.
There is speculation among residents that the floods may have been exacerbated by a dam failure, although this has yet to be confirmed by authorities. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency has announced that it will begin distributing relief packages to those affected by the calamity, addressing the urgent need for assistance.
In addition to the human toll, infrastructure has also suffered significantly. Roads and bridges have been damaged, complicating transportation and impacting local commerce. The Nigerian Red Cross has acknowledged the “significant loss of life and widespread distress” caused by the floods, further emphasizing the severity of the situation.
With the rainy season ongoing, flood events are not uncommon in Nigeria, typically occurring from April to October. The country has faced similar floods in previous years, with over 600 fatalities and substantial displacement reported in 2022 alone. As recovery efforts continue, the long-term impact on the community and its economy remains uncertain, with many residents now grappling with loss and trauma.
