Irapuato, Mexico — A tragic incident at a religious celebration in the early hours of Thursday left at least 12 people dead, including a 17-year-old, after a gunman opened fire on revelers in Guanajuato state. Authorities are investigating the shooter and the motives behind the brutal attack.
The shooting occurred amidst festivities celebrating the nativity of St. John the Baptist, where attendees were seen dancing and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere before chaos erupted. Eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media illustrate the panic that ensued as people fled the scene when gunfire rang out.
Rodolfo Gómez Cervantes, an official from Irapuato, confirmed at a news briefing that the death toll had reached 12, with around 20 additional individuals suffering injuries in the melee. The wounded have been taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her sorrow at the occurrence, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. “It is very unfortunate what transpired, and we are committed to uncovering the details,” she remarked.
This incident marks the second significant gun attack on religious gatherings in Mexico within a month. Earlier in May, seven individuals were killed during a shooting at a Catholic Church celebration in San Bartolo de Berrios, also in Guanajuato.
Guanajuato, situated northwest of Mexico City, is notorious for its high levels of violence, primarily due to conflicts among organized crime groups vying for dominance. So far this year, the state has reported approximately 1,435 homicides, the highest in the country, underscoring ongoing security challenges.
Local law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to address the violence, as communities grapple with the fear and trauma resulting from such attacks. With the rising incidence of gun-related violence during social and religious events, calls for increased safety measures are becoming more urgent.
As investigations continue, the residents of Irapuato and surrounding areas are left mourning the loss of life while seeking answers and a sense of security in their daily lives.
