SALINAS, Calif. — The Salinas community is reeling from the tragic loss of a 14-year-old student, marking the second murder of a high schooler in the Salinas Union High School District within three months. The latest victim, Ethan Emmanuel Rodriguez, a freshman at Alisal High School, was shot and killed shortly after school dismissed on Friday afternoon.
Zach Dunagan, a spokesman for the Salinas Police Department, described the incident as “heinous,” underlining the shock and devastation felt by the community. School district Superintendent Zandra Galvan echoed these sentiments, expressing deep sorrow for Rodriguez’s family and the need for community support during this challenging time.
Rodriguez’s life was cut short near the intersection of Camarillo and Moreno shortly after 3:30 p.m., in what witnesses report was a crowded area. Police believe that multiple people may have seen the shooting, yet they have been careful not to disclose details about potential suspects, aiming to protect the integrity of any witness accounts.
Detectives are currently gathering evidence, appealing to the public for cellphone and surveillance footage that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Dunagan emphasized the importance of accuracy in the investigation, noting, “This was a 14-year-old who lost his life, and we seek justice for his family.”
In response to the tragedy, the school has bolstered security measures and deployed mental health resources to assist students and staff in coping with the grief. “We want to ensure both physical and psychological safety in the aftermath of such a traumatic event,” Galvan stated, highlighting the dual focus on emotional and physical well-being.
The shooting has spurred local leaders, including Councilman Jose Barajas, to advocate for youth involvement in preventing violence. Barajas emphasized the importance of empowering young people to become advocates for change in their communities. “They need to step forward as messengers among their peers to communicate that violence is unacceptable,” he said.
The community recalls a similar tragedy from September, when a 17-year-old named Edgar Gomez was shot. In that case, police swiftly apprehended two suspects with the assistance of local residents. Law enforcement hopes that community engagement will again play a critical role in resolving this latest case.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, assuring that tips can be submitted anonymously. As the Salinas community mourns yet another loss, the emphasis remains on unity, healing, and action against youth violence.
