Trenton Man Convicted of First-Degree Murder in Inmate Death at Bayside State Prison

BRIDGETON, N.J. — Bruce Duette, 45, of Trenton, was convicted of first-degree murder on Wednesday for the 2022 fatal assault of fellow inmate Martin Sanchez at Bayside State Prison in Leesburg. The verdict came after a thorough investigation led by the New Jersey Department of Corrections’ Special Investigations Division, alongside county detectives.

The incident took place on November 21, 2022, when prison staff discovered Sanchez unresponsive in his cell. He had suffered severe facial injuries and was later declared dead at the institution. A subsequent autopsy categorized the death as a homicide, attributing it to blunt force trauma and neck compression.

Evidence from the crime scene was pivotal in identifying Duette as the alleged assailant. DNA recovered from various items, including a sneaker, a sock, and beneath Sanchez’s fingernails, helped establish a direct link between Duette and the crime. Investigators revealed that Sanchez was due for release the day following his death, amplifying the tragedy of the situation.

In court, prosecutors highlighted Duette’s history as a persistent offender, which paved the way for a potentially lengthy sentence. He now faces a prison term of 30 years to life, with the stipulation that he must serve at least 30 years or 85 percent of the sentenced time, whichever is greater.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 21, 2025, under the presiding Judge Cristen P. D’Arrigo. Representing the state were Assistant Prosecutors Cathryn Wilson and Jeffrey Krachun, while Duette’s defense was led by attorney Emily Bell.

This case sheds light on ongoing issues within correctional facilities, including violence among inmates and the challenges in maintaining safety and order. As Duette awaits sentencing, the wider implications of the case raise questions about inmate rehabilitation and the potential for reform within the penal system.
