YORK COUNTY, Pa. — An autopsy has confirmed that Matthew Ruth, who was involved in a deadly confrontation with law enforcement, died from multiple gunshot wounds in an incident that resulted in the loss of three detectives’ lives. The York County Coroner’s Office declared his death a homicide but noted that it was justified under the circumstances surrounding the event.
Ruth, 24, was shot during a standoff with detectives from the Northern York County Regional Police Department on Haar Road in North Codorus Township. Law enforcement had arrived at the scene shortly after 2 p.m. to execute an arrest warrant stemming from an alleged stalking incident that occurred the previous night. Upon their arrival, Ruth reportedly ambushed the officers from inside the residence.
The violent encounter resulted in the deaths of Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaish Emenheiser, all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth detective sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. The coroner’s report indicates that after Ruth shot the detectives, he was engaged by an injured sheriff’s deputy and another detective on the scene, resulting in his fatal wounds.
York County District Attorney Tim Barker indicated that the use of force by law enforcement was deemed justified, citing the circumstances of the confrontation. The incident has raised questions about the risks faced by officers during such operations.
The funeral services for the fallen detectives are scheduled for Thursday, September 25. Community members, along with fellow officers, are expected to attend to honor their sacrifices.
The injured sheriff’s deputy, Lt. David Godfrey, is a 24-year veteran of the York County Sheriff’s Office and remains in recovery. The identity of the injured detective from the Northern York County Regional Police Department has not been publicly disclosed.
