STOCKTON, England — Two twins have been sentenced to four years in prison for their role in a brutal attack on a man that left him unconscious. The incident occurred earlier this year and was recorded by surveillance cameras outside a residence on Hartington Road.
According to testimony presented in Teesside Crown Court, 20-year-old Leon Bayat initiated the assault by striking the victim with a pole. Prosecutors revealed that he then proceeded to kick the man in the head repeatedly and culminated his violent assault by jumping onto the victim’s chest while he lay on the ground.
The court proceedings also indicated that Leon’s twin brother, Lewis, soon joined the attack. Cainan Lonsdale, the prosecutor, described how the brothers worked in concert, with Leon employing physical blows using both the pole and his feet while Lewis assisted in the violent beating.
After the attack, the twins attempted to evade capture by changing their clothing and walking over the victim. However, they were apprehended by authorities shortly thereafter. The victim has not cooperated with law enforcement during the investigation and chose not to provide a statement on how the attack affected him.
At the time of the incident, the twins were under a community order for a previous offense involving an assault on a police officer. Both Leon and Lewis Bayat pleaded guilty to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm stemming from the April 7 altercation.
During the court proceedings, defense attorneys highlighted their clients’ difficult pasts. Jennifer Coxon, representing Leon, noted that he had endured a troubled upbringing, having spent significant time in the care system. Michele Turner, speaking for Lewis, pointed out that he was just shy of his 20th birthday at the time of the crime, having turned 20 while in custody awaiting trial.
Recorder Andrew Sutcliffe KC addressed the gravity of the case in his sentencing remarks. He emphasized the seriousness of the assault, citing the distressing footage that made it apparent both twins played a significant role in inflicting injuries on the victim, which were not only limited to the head but likely affected other areas of his body as well.
The incident has raised concerns within the community regarding violent behaviors and the accountability of young offenders. As the Bayat twins begin their sentences, the case serves as a stark reminder of the repercussions of unchecked aggression and the impact it can have on individuals and neighborhoods.
