Altoona, Pennsylvania — A hospital technician who faced a violent assault while on duty has now been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home. Travis Dunn, who works in the emergency department of UPMC Altoona, sustained serious injuries during the incident, including a cracked skull, a brain bleed, and a broken tooth.
UPMC Altoona President Mike Corso confirmed that Dunn is receiving full pay and benefits as he recuperates. “We stand firmly with Travis and his loved ones,” Corso stated, emphasizing that Dunn’s health and recovery are paramount to the hospital. He added that Dunn is also eligible for all worker’s compensation benefits, alleviating any financial burden related to his medical bills.
Colleagues of Dunn, shaken by the attack, believe he has become a symbol in the ongoing conversation about workplace safety in healthcare settings. Jaime Balsamo, a registered nurse at the facility, expressed concerns that the culture of safety in the hospital needs urgent improvement. “We’ve been advocating for changes for a long time. Now, unfortunately, we are seeing the consequences of inaction,” Balsamo said.
The hospital administration has pledged to address the escalating violence affecting healthcare workers. In a public statement, UPMC reiterated its commitment to fostering a secure environment for both staff and patients. The organization is focused on measures that will help prevent similar incidents in the future.
Bradley Lloyd, the individual accused of attacking Dunn, is currently detained at Blair County Prison. As investigations continue, the incident has prompted discussions among hospital staff and management regarding safety protocols and measures that can be reinforced to protect workers.
The hospital’s response and staff solidarity reflect a growing awareness of the risks faced by healthcare workers, especially in emergency departments. Balsamo underscored the need for comprehensive training on dealing with violent situations, advocating for policies that prioritize safety.
As Dunn continues his recovery, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges healthcare professionals face every day, urging both staff and management to collaborate towards creating a safer work environment.
