WASHINGTON — Metropolitan Police are intensifying efforts to solve a fatal shooting incident that occurred last month near Union Station, one of the city’s busiest transit hubs. The 18-year-old victim, identified as Wayne McDaniel, tragically lost his life shortly after 4:30 p.m. on February 10.
Authorities report that Amtrak Police were alerted to the gunfire near the station’s bus waiting area. Responding quickly, officers discovered McDaniel by the escalators leading to the parking garage, critically wounded.
Despite immediate medical attention, McDaniel succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The assailant fled prior to police arrival, sparking an ongoing manhunt.
In their latest move to capture the suspect, detectives have released security footage that captures a brief interaction between McDaniel and the suspect just before the shooting. This new evidence was released on Thursday and could be crucial in identifying the gunman.
D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith provided further details, explaining that McDaniel and the suspected shooter appeared to enter the waiting area together. According to Smith, an altercation ensued when McDaniel reportedly tried to grab something from the man, who then drew a firearm and shot McDaniel.
Four other individuals were present during the incident but were unharmed. The quick response from law enforcement ensured no additional injuries occurred.
Chief Smith emphasized the brutality of the attack and the urgency in capturing the perpetrator. “This brazen act of violence has not only taken a young life but also endangered others in a busy public area. We are determined to bring the offender to justice and restore the sense of security at Union Station,” said Smith.
Surveillance video suggests McDaniel managed to run a short distance after being shot but eventually collapsed and fell down an escalator.
