Violence Erupts Again Near Portland Library as Good Samaritan is Stabbed in Downtown Assault

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man was stabbed multiple times in a violent incident outside the Central Library in downtown Portland on Monday afternoon, reigniting concerns about safety in the area. The attack occurred just as the 44-year-old man left the library around 5 p.m. He attempted to intervene during a dispute when he was assaulted by three individuals, one of whom brandished a knife while the others struck him with skateboards.

Emergency responders quickly transported the victim to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover from his injuries. Police were informed of the incident but found that the assailants had fled the scene. Swift investigations led officers to target the Holladay Park area in Northeast Portland, where all three suspects were taken into custody. They now face serious charges, including second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

The incident marks the second violent occurrence near the Central Library in less than two months. Following a fatal shooting in the vicinity on July 1, measures were implemented to enhance security within the library and its surroundings. In response to the recent stabbing, the Portland Police Bureau acknowledged the essential roles played by library staff, security personnel, and transit police in managing the situation.

Library officials had already announced a series of new protocols aimed at bolstering safety, including increased foot patrols by security officers and enhanced monitoring of surveillance cameras. These changes were intended to counteract the ongoing issues of drug use and violence in the area, as highlighted in a previous public statement.

Community leaders are pressing for more substantial actions to address the safety concerns that continue to plague the library and downtown Portland. Andrew Hoan, CEO of the Portland Metro Chamber, voiced his frustrations after Monday’s incident. “Just two months after a deadly shooting at that library, another person was brutally attacked yesterday,” he stated. He urged county officials to take decisive action, questioning how many more casualties would be required before significant measures are put in place to ensure public safety.

Hoan specifically called out Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson for perceived inaction regarding the ongoing violence near the library. In response, Pederson referred to Hoan’s remarks as politically motivated and disconnected from the realities of the situation. She took the opportunity to commend the efforts of library staff and police in addressing the latest incident, while emphasizing that security remains a priority.

As the discussions around safety in the downtown area intensify, both community members and officials are left grappling with the urgent need for effective solutions to combat the rising tide of violence.
