CHICAGO — A violent weekend marred by shootings has left at least one person dead and four others injured across the city, according to local authorities. The incidents occurred during the Memorial Day weekend, raising concerns about public safety as cities across the nation grapple with rising gun violence.
The first shooting happened Friday evening when a 28-year-old man was struck in the hip while on the sidewalk in the 7300 block of South Winchester Avenue. He was able to drive himself to Holy Cross Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Shortly after, at approximately 9:10 p.m. in Kenwood, a 46-year-old woman became embroiled in a heated argument with a man and another woman in the 4700 block of South Lake Park Avenue. During the confrontation, the two assailants physically attacked the woman, who in turn drew a firearm and discharged her weapon. A 33-year-old woman was struck twice in the armpit and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was reported to be in good health. The instigator, a woman with a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card, sustained facial bruises but chose not to seek medical attention.
The two attackers were taken into custody, with charges anticipated as investigations progressed over the weekend.
Other shootings further fueled concerns from Friday evening to Monday morning. In one incident on Saturday, a 35-year-old man was shot multiple times while sitting in his car in the 1700 block of North Spaulding Avenue around 2:46 a.m. He was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Witnesses reported that the assailant fled the scene after firing from another vehicle.
Later that morning, a 39-year-old man was shot in the wrist by an unknown assailant who fired from a white SUV in the 700 block of East 60th Street. He was also treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center and was in stable condition.
In another alarming incident around 11:01 a.m., an 18-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds while in an alley in the 200 block of South Cicero Avenue. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital and was listed in critical condition.
The weekend’s violence culminated in the afternoon where a 46-year-old man was shot in the head while seated in his vehicle in the 800 block of North Sacramento Boulevard. The car subsequently crashed into a parked vehicle and a light pole, and the man was reported in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
As the Memorial Day weekend concluded, no suspects had been arrested in connection with the majority of these incidents. Local officials are ramping up efforts to address the escalating gun violence and ensure community safety.
