Violence Strikes Amsterdam: Antisemitic Attacks Target Israeli Soccer Fans After Match

Amsterdam, Netherlands — Violence erupted in Amsterdam following a soccer game, resulting in hospitalizations, arrests, and a city left reeling from antisemitic attacks. Dutch authorities reported that the rioters targeted supporters of the Israeli team, escalating tensions in a city known for its historical Jewish community.

Following the Thursday night Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax, clashes between local youths and Israeli fans turned violent. The Amsterdam police confirmed that five individuals were hospitalized while 20-30 others sustained lighter injuries. They detained at least 62 people in response to the violence, with 10 still under arrest as investigations continue.

The violent acts have been widely condemned by local and international leaders. U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the necessity of a global commitment against antisemitism, stating this incident echoed “dark moments in history.” The response from European leaders was also swift, with Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, insisting that antisemitism has no place in Europe.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a “horrific antisemitic attack” and reassured that efforts were being made to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens involved. Instead of a rescue mission, Netanyahu’s office coordinated with civil aviation to facilitate commercial flights for those affected. The Israel government initially dispatched two planes, but later adjusted their approach as per the evolving situation.

The Dutch Prime Minister, Dick Schoof, expressed deep shame and assured that every effort would be made to prosecute those responsible for the attacks. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema shared similar sentiments, describing the events as a “dark moment” for the city and articulating her deep humiliation and commitment to justice.

This unrest follows a proposed ban by Mayor Halsema on a pro-Palestinian demonstration near the soccer stadium. She had feared potential violence could erupt between demonstrators and Israeli supporters.

In response to the attacks, Amsterdam authorities announced increased security measures at Jewish institutions across the city. These new precautions underscore the city’s vigilant stance in protecting its Jewish community, which remains significant both historically and culturally.

The incident reflects broader tensions that have been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups, often manifesting in diaspora communities around the world. The ramifications of international conflicts are increasingly visible across Europe, where cities like Amsterdam, with diverse populations, can become flashpoints.

Concerns about antisemitism and community safety continue to be at the forefront of discussions among European leaders as they navigate the challenges of maintaining societal harmony in the face of global unrest and domestic disturbances linked to international conflicts.
