Chicago police are investigating a violent weekend that left one person dead and at least nine others injured due to shootings across the city. The incidents spanned from Friday evening into Sunday morning, with victims ranging in age from 18 to 45.
The weekend’s first shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Friday in West Garfield Park, where officers responded to reports of a shooting on West Adams Street. They discovered a 45-year-old man lying unresponsive on the sidewalk. Emergency responders transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
On Saturday evening, gunfire erupted in Englewood at around 6:45 p.m. A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest while on the sidewalk in the 7300 block of South Emerald Avenue and was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Later that evening, a 19-year-old sought treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital for a gunshot wound to his right forearm, though he was uncooperative with police regarding the incident.
In another Saturday incident, a 39-year-old man reported he had been shot in the shoulder while traveling in a vehicle, eventually making his way to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition.
Sunday brought additional violence, beginning with a shooting just after 2 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Albany Avenue. A 25-year-old man was shot by an assailant who emerged from a white vehicle and then fled the scene. Authorities transported the victim to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.
Earlier Sunday, at 12:54 a.m., police in the Morgan Park district responded to a disturbance in the 11400 block of South Davol Street. While attempting to disperse a crowd engaged in a fight, a firearm discharged, striking both an officer and an 18-year-old man. Fortunately, the officer was protected by a ballistic vest and was discharged from the hospital shortly after treatment. The shooter was also injured and taken to a local hospital.
Additionally, at 2:21 a.m., two men traveling in a vehicle in South Austin were targeted by gunfire from assailants on foot. Both men sustained gunshot wounds: one to the ankle and the other to the abdomen. They subsequently drove themselves to Loretto Hospital, where they were treated and reported to be in fair condition.
As of now, police have not made any arrests related to these incidents, and investigations continue into the shootings that left the community shaken. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to address the ongoing violence.
