BONIFAY, FL – A Florida mother, sentenced to 18 years in prison, admitted her role in the tragic death of her toddler, who was left in a hot vehicle overnight while she and her partner struggled with drug addiction.
Kathreen Adams, 25, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in connection to the death of her nearly two-year-old daughter. The incident occurred on May 16, 2023, while Adams and her boyfriend, Christopher McLean, were under the influence of methamphetamine. The girl was left unattended in a locked car for approximately 14 hours.
The child’s overheated body had reached a temperature of 107 degrees at the time of her death. The case was overseen by Judge Russell Roberts of the Holmes County Circuit Court, who handed down the sentence to Adams, acknowledging her cooperation in the investigation against McLean, who received a 22-year sentence.
Prosecutor Peter Overstreet noted the horrific nature of the case during the sentencing, recognizing Adams for taking responsibility, which was crucial for the state’s successful prosecution.
The situation unfolded when a distressed 911 call was made at 3:43 p.m. The dispatcher struggled to gather details from the caller, prompting a welfare check by local authorities. The first officer arrived at the scene within minutes, met outside by someone with the unresponsive child. Attempts at resuscitation were made promptly but proved unsuccessful.
At a press conference, Sheriff John Tate described the event, revealing that EMS personnel pronounced the toddler dead at 3:59 p.m. Investigators, noticing the abnormal body temperature, quickly suspected foul play and sought to piece together the timeline.
Adams confessed during questioning that after her midnight shift, she collected her children from a babysitter, drove home, and then left the younger child asleep in the vehicle while she went inside and fell asleep herself. It wasn’t until that afternoon that the parents realized their mistake.
Sheriff Tate highlighted Adams’ eventual cooperation, contrasting her willingness to discuss the events with McLean’s refusal to do so, having invoked his rights to refrain from making a statement.
