1-year-old Michigan boy dies after babysitter beats him and throws him against wall

ROSEVILLE, MI – A Macomb County jury has found a 24-year-old woman guilty of murder in the fatal beating of a toddler she had been hired to babysit, bringing to a close a case that shocked the local community.

Kimora Launmei Hodges was convicted Thursday of killing 23-month-old Kyrie Starks in June 2022, according to court officials. Prosecutors said Hodges brutally assaulted the little boy, causing a severe head injury that ultimately proved fatal.

Authorities began investigating after they received a call from staff at a Roseville hospital on June 22, 2022, alerting them to a young patient suffering from life-threatening head trauma. Shortly before, Kyrie’s mother had rushed him to the emergency room after picking him up from Hodges’ apartment on Little Mack Avenue, where the woman had regularly babysat for the toddler while his mother worked.

According to court testimony, Hodges contacted the child’s mother, saying that Kyrie appeared unwell. Upon arriving at the home, the mother found her son experiencing repeated seizures and in critical condition. Medical staff at the hospital discovered that the boy had suffered blunt force trauma to his head, was bleeding from his ears, and required emergency brain surgery.

When questioned by police, Hodges initially claimed that Kyrie had suffered an allergic reaction after ingesting soap. The boy’s mother, initially believing in Hodges’ explanation, later learned from doctors about the extent of her son’s injuries, which included indications of severe physical abuse.

Investigators quickly ruled out an allergic reaction after reviewing medical assessments. Police arrested Hodges hours after the child was admitted to the hospital. During interviews, she admitted to physically assaulting the child while under her care, conceding she may have hit him too hard. Still, she denied intentionally directing her anger toward Kyrie, according to case documents.

Hodges was first charged with first-degree child abuse. That charge was upgraded to murder following the boy’s death on June 15, a day after he was hospitalized.

Detectives described Hodges as a neighbor and trusted caretaker, with the victim’s mother relying on her for childcare on several occasions. The mother’s trust was deeply shaken after the tragedy, noting that Hodges’ own child was the same age as her son.

A sentencing hearing for Hodges has been scheduled for Oct. 2 in Macomb County Circuit Court. She faces the possibility of life in prison, with prosecutors calling the child’s death a deeply troubling case of betrayal and violence.

The case has raised questions about background checks and the safety of informal childcare arrangements. Local authorities have reminded residents about the importance of vetting caretakers, even those known personally, to help prevent such tragedies in the future.

Kyrie Starks’ death has prompted an outpouring of support for his grieving family, who have described him as a joyful and loving child. Community members have planned vigils and outreach efforts in his memory.

As the sentencing date approaches, the family and community continue to mourn the loss of Kyrie while seeking answers as to how such an incident could have occurred in the hands of someone they trusted.
