MIAMI SHORES, FL – Authorities in Florida have charged a woman with grievous abuse after she allegedly subjected her young son and a 65-year-old man to repeated acts of violence and torture. Jasmine Jean-Baptiste, 31, reportedly turned to cruelty while living in the man’s home, according to police reports.
Jean-Baptiste is accused of inflicting severe injuries on the man, leaving him blind in one eye. The Miami Shores Police Department describes her as having taken advantage of the man’s goodwill and turning his home into a scene of ongoing abuse against her son, who she allegedly forced into prolonged squatting positions as punishment.
A witness provided crucial evidence, including photographs showing extensive bruising and lacerations on the man, corresponding with his claims of maltreatment. These images depict a history of violence that continues to unfold since she and her son began living with the man roughly nine years ago.
The troubling situation traces its roots to a time when Jean-Baptiste allegedly let her son’s stepfather abuse him, a pattern she continued. Her disciplinary actions reportedly included depriving the boy of water during punishments for minor misbehaviors at school.
The situation came to light after a school coach overheard Jean-Baptiste threatening her son, which prompted an investigation by child welfare authorities. It was during this investigation that the elderly man revealed his fears of Jean-Baptiste and detailed his inability to defend himself against her assaults.
In one detailed instance, the man recounted being punched without warning, resulting in the loss of vision in one eye. In another attack, he said Jean-Baptiste knocked out one of his teeth. “I can’t hit her,” he explained, expressing concern about the societal repercussions of defending himself against a woman.
The young victim corroborated these incidents, stating that his mother frequently used belt buckles and her hands to punish him, causing lasting harm. Despite the ongoing violence, the man expressed a deep concern for the child, emphasizing that his safety should be the focal point of authorities.
Jean-Baptiste now faces severe legal repercussions, charged with aggravated child abuse causing serious bodily injury and aggravated abuse of an elder. She is currently held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as the investigation continues.
