BAY SHORE, NY – A 15-year-old boy from Long Island stands accused of murder, attempted murder, and assault after a brutal attack on his family, authorities announced Thursday.
The teenager, whose name is withheld due to his age, could face between 15 years to life in prison if convicted for the alleged murder of his grandmother, Concetta Chendemi, and the stabbing of his mother, Vanessa Chendemi.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, the incident unfolded last week following an argument over school attendance between the boy and his mother. The altercation initially sparked when Vanessa Chendemi attempted to confiscate her son’s laptop, a disciplinary action prompted by her mother, Concetta Chendemi, in response to the teen skipping classes.
The confrontation quickly escalated at around 9:40 p.m. when the teenager allegedly grabbed a knife in a fit of rage and attacked his grandmother, stabbing her 35 times. His mother, who intervened, was also stabbed during the altercation. District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney stated that Vanessa Chendemi managed to play dead, which likely saved her life.
After the attacks, the teen reportedly fled the scene. As soon as it was possible, Vanessa managed to exit the house and flagged down a passing driver for help. The driver provided her refuge and contacted emergency services, leading to the police’s swift arrival at the crime scene.
Concetta Chendemi was discovered deceased upon the officers’ arrival, while Vanessa was rushed to a local hospital, where she is currently recovering from her serious injuries. The teenage suspect was arrested later that night and remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 21.
District Attorney Tierney expressed his sympathy for the family, emphasizing the layers of emotional trauma wrought by such violence within a family unit. “This is a heartbreaking situation,” he stated, committing to pursue full justice for those affected.
The alarming nature of this case underscores the severe legal consequences the young suspect faces. It also highlights the profound and lasting impact of domestic violence on families and communities alike.
