17-year-old finds out girlfriend is cheating and shoots up apartment but kills the wrong man

HOUSTON, TX – A tragic misjudgment led to the death of a man and injury of another in Houston, as two teenagers allegedly opened fire on an apartment, suspecting infidelity. According to police, Fernando Amaya and Christopher Portillo Luna, both 17, have been charged with murder and other related offenses following the death of Marcos Cotto Torres, 41.

The unfortunate incident unfolded on March 18, just before 1 a.m., when Houston police responded to reports of a shooting at a residential complex in the west of the city.

First responders found Torres unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds, including a fatal one to the back of his head. Another victim in the apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body, survived and was treated in the hospital.

The confrontation stemmed from a personal conflict. An affidavit reveals that Amaya suspected his girlfriend of being unfaithful to another man who resided in the targeted apartment. However, the person Amaya presumed to be his rival emerged from the attack physically unscathed.

Prior to the incident, Amaya had reportedly threatened to commit an act of violence against the apartment, followed by plans to harm himself, as recounted by Amaya’s girlfriend.

Following the shooting, the two teens allegedly fled the scene in a white SUV linked to one of their families. Investigators discovered a daunting 84 spent rounds from what was described as an AK-style rifle, providing stark evidence of the violent barrage. Local footage depicted the aftermath, showing windows covered with plywood and bullet-scarred walls.

Amaya was apprehended just hours after the shooting, while Portillo Luna was arrested days later. Both suspects remain in custody, each with a bond set exceeding $1 million. Their court proceedings are set to continue this month.

This tragic case underscores the dire consequences of misdirected anger and violence, leaving a community to grieve the loss of life and reflect on the devastating impact of firearm misuse.
