TAVARES, FL – A Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the fatal abuse of a toddler left in his care. Travis Ray Thompson, 27, was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of 2-year-old Jacklyn Schwingel after less than two hours of jury deliberation earlier this week.
The young girl suffered extreme injuries to her spine in a horrific incident in May 2022, a mere week after her mother ended her relationship with Thompson. Jacklyn’s spine was found to be “completely severed,” and extensive internal injuries contributed to her death merely three hours after she was rushed to the hospital.
Judge Barbara Kissner of the Fifth Judicial Circuit imposed the life sentence following the conviction. “This monster stole the life of an innocent child, and today, the justice system made sure he will never walk free again,” expressed State Attorney Bill Gladson in a statement.
On the day of the incident, Thompson initially delayed taking Jacklyn to the hospital, resulting in a 30-minute gap after the injuries had occurred. An autopsy revealed these injuries were inflicted through significant and gradual force applied to her body, leading to a complete disarticulation of her lumbar spine.
The tragic event unfolded when Jacklyn’s mother had left her in Thompson’s care while she was at work. Investigators reported that Thompson took the toddler to a nearby lake and later returned home, claiming she had suffered an injury while he was inside using the bathroom. When Jacklyn’s condition worsened, Thompson and the child’s mother, who had returned home, rushed her to the hospital.
Medical staff at AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares, suspicious of the grave injuries, contacted law enforcement, triggering the investigation. Despite maintaining his innocence throughout, Thompson was unable to provide a plausible explanation for Jacklyn’s fatal injuries.
Investigative efforts disclosed a volatile relationship between Thompson and Jacklyn’s mother, underscored by messages that revealed Thompson’s resentment following their breakup. Such evidence was crucial in linking Thompson to the heinous crime.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods praised the efforts of his team, stating, “I’m incredibly proud of my Major Crimes detectives for their relentless work on this heartbreaking case. Their dedication helped secure justice for an innocent child.” Detectives worked diligently to ensure the conviction, driven by a collective resolve to seek justice for Jacklyn.
