2-year-old Illinois girl hospitalized with brain bleed and skull fracture after mom’s boyfriend got mad she threw his phone

PLAINFIELD, IL – Authorities have arrested a 21-year-old man, Jordan Padilla, following allegations of assault on a toddler that left the child with severe injuries, including a fractured skull. The Will County Sheriff’s Office reported that emergency services were summoned to a Plainfield residence on March 15, where they discovered a 2-year-old girl unconscious but breathing, accompanied by her mother and Padilla, the mother’s boyfriend.

First responders observed “suspicious injuries” to the young girl’s face and abdomen, prompting her immediate hospitalization. Medical evaluations later revealed she was in critical condition, necessitating transfer to a hospital in Chicago.

Doctors disclosed the child was suffering from significant symptoms, including a “blown left pupil,” a “left-sided gaze preference,” and facial bruising, indicative of more severe internal injuries. Further examinations confirmed the presence of a skull fracture and a brain bleed.

Investigators interrogated both Padilla and the girl’s mother, uncovering inconsistencies in Padilla’s account of the incident. According to the sheriff’s office, Padilla’s explanations did not align with the child’s injuries. During questioning, he allegedly demonstrated how he had struck the toddler, leading detectives to conclude he had hit her in the face with his elbow.

Will County officials suggested that the alleged assault occurred after the child threw Padilla’s cellphone, an act which seemingly triggered his violent response. Notably, the child’s mother was reportedly unaware of the incident at the time, as she was not present in the room when it happened.

Following the investigation, Padilla was charged with multiple offenses, including battery and aggravated assault of a child. He is now in custody at Will County Adult Detention Facility, awaiting his next court date, where he faces serious criminal charges.

This incident has prompted widespread concern and discussions on the need for heightened measures to prevent domestic violence, especially when vulnerable individuals like children are involved.

The sheriff’s office and local authorities continue to investigate, and community support services have been mobilized to provide assistance and ensure the child receives the care she needs during her recovery.
