23-year-old Checkers employee shoots a customer asking to speak to manager because of mayonnaise

KISSIMMEE, FL – A disagreement over a fast-food order escalated dramatically outside a Checkers restaurant in Florida, culminating in the fatal shooting of a customer late Wednesday evening, according to law enforcement.

Elijah Mackey, 23, has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of 40-year-old Wesley Robertson. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to the scene around 10 p.m., where the incident occurred at the Checkers located at 5780 W. U.S. 192 in Kissimmee.

Robertson, who was shot, was swiftly taken to a medical facility, where he was later pronounced dead.

Witness accounts provided to investigators depict an altercation between Robertson and a Checkers employee, centering around a dispute over his food order. It was reported that Robertson was upset about missing mayonnaise packets and repeatedly requested to speak with a manager. During this exchange, Mackey exited the building to confront Robertson.

Tensions heightened when Robertson allegedly insulted Mackey, prompting Mackey to allegedly draw a firearm and shoot Robertson, according to the arrest affidavit. Mackey reportedly fled the scene, returning briefly to retrieve a backpack before disappearing again.

Authorities subsequently discovered Mackey hiding under a stairwell at a nearby hotel. Upon capture, Mackey inquired about Robertson’s condition, as detailed in the affidavit. Surveillance footage reviewed by police corroborated the sequence of events, showing Mackey exiting through a drive-thru window to confront and shoot Robertson.

Mackey has been assigned legal representation and remains in custody without bond at the Osceola County Jail.

In response to the incident, the Checkers Corporation expressed its shock and grief. Emphasizing the actions of the involved employee do not represent the broader organization or its employees, the company pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation while extending condolences to Robertson’s family.
