SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI – A Michigan man is facing charges after authorities say he fatally stabbed his estranged wife during a custody exchange at a gas station, leaving their child waiting alone in a nearby vehicle.
Sydney Emmanuel Davis Jr., 25, was arrested earlier this week and is charged with first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the death of 23-year-old Fatme Davis. Law enforcement officials allege the attack occurred late Friday afternoon inside a Meijer gas station along Hall Road in Shelby Township, roughly 20 miles north of Detroit.
According to investigators, the couple had arranged to meet at the station as part of a child custody exchange. At some point during their encounter, police say Davis assaulted and stabbed Fatme Davis multiple times. Witnesses at the scene immediately called 911, alerting authorities to an ongoing attack inside the establishment.
Officers and emergency medical teams arrived just after 5 p.m. to find Fatme Davis severely injured. She was taken to a local hospital but succumbed to her wounds shortly after arrival. Authorities did not release the age or gender of the child who was present at the gas station, but confirmed the child was not harmed and was found in the mother’s car outside.
Multiple witnesses at the gas station provided statements and descriptions of the suspect. Police say this information aided them in quickly identifying Sydney Davis as the individual involved. Officials described the incident as stemming from a domestic violence dispute, rather than a random act.
Following the stabbing, police launched a search for Davis, who was traced to Armada, approximately 20 miles northeast of Shelby Township. He was apprehended without incident a short time later and transported to the Macomb County Detention Center, where he remains in custody.
Davis appeared in court Wednesday for arraignment, during which Magistrate Judge Jim Verploeg denied him bond. He is expected to return to court on October 14 for a preliminary examination hearing.
Authorities condemned the killing in stark terms, calling it a distressing example of deadly domestic violence. Law enforcement officials and prosecutors pledged full commitment to pursuing justice for the victim, emphasizing the seriousness and tragedy of the case.
