23-year-old shooter targeted and hunted 20-year-old man gunned down in car in Virginia

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A man from North Carolina has been apprehended in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred on a Virginia roadway in 2023, where a passenger was fatally injured.

Jahil Arman Martin, 23, is facing a first-degree murder charge following the death of 20-year-old Nyjeon Dameae Brandon.

During a news conference on Tuesday, Martinsville Police Chief Rob Fincher characterized the July 9 shooting as a deliberate and premeditated act. He stressed that Brandon was the intended victim in what he described as an “outright execution.”

Brandon sustained fatal injuries early that morning while riding in a car on Commonwealth Boulevard, located in southwest Virginia. Although transported to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Two other passengers in the same vehicle also incurred injuries, according to authorities.

Despite the launch of a homicide investigation, progression was hindered due to a lack of witness cooperation. Fincher noted challenges investigators faced, including attempts to conceal evidence by those with information.

After more than a year of detective work, authorities connected Martin to the crime, establishing a prior relationship between him and the victim. Surveillance from traffic cameras was pivotal in solidifying the link leading to Martin’s arrest, according to Fincher.

Fincher also revealed that Martin’s arrest might not be the final development in this case, suggesting further arrests could follow as the investigation proceeds.

“Efforts to bring all parties involved to justice remain ongoing,” said Fincher, affirming the police department’s commitment to holding everyone accountable.

Brandon, who was remembered fondly through his obituary, was a graduate of John Motley Morehead High School. Described as compassionate and generous, Brandon was known for brightening rooms with his smile and relished time spent playing sports and surrounded by family and friends.

Martin is currently detained in North Carolina and is expected to be extradited to Virginia to face charges. The investigation continues as authorities seek justice for Brandon and his family.
