34-year-old Kansas man being evicted by his mother and his aunt shoots them

LENEXA, KS – A Kansas man is facing murder charges after allegedly shooting his mother and aunt, then fleeing to Missouri, where he reportedly confessed to pharmacy staff. The man, identified as 34-year-old Luke Anthony Howard, is currently in custody in Clay County, Missouri, with a bond set at $5 million.

Authorities allege that Howard killed his mother, Valerie Howard, 63, and his aunt, Joyce Austin, 71, in the home they shared in Lenexa, Kansas. Court documents indicate that the alleged shooting occurred following an eviction notice given to Howard by Austin.

The crime came to light on February 12 when Howard appeared at a pharmacy in Liberty, Missouri, approximately 30 miles from the scene of the murders. Pharmacy staff allegedly noticed Howard with bloodstained clothing, and he reportedly informed them of his need to surrender to law enforcement. Upon their arrival, police reported that Howard confessed to the killings.

The Lenexa police discovered the bodies of Valerie Howard and Joyce Austin at their residence, both victims of gunshot wounds. Law enforcement found approximately a dozen shell casings at the crime scene. Additionally, Austin’s son contacted police that day, inquiring about his mother and noting Howard’s possession of firearms.

Court records detail tense interactions leading up to the incident. On February 10, police were called to the home following a physical altercation between Howard and his mother. Valerie Howard and her sister reportedly locked themselves in separate rooms, fearing Howard’s aggression, which had surfaced in earlier incidents.

Austin placed another call to the police, describing Howard’s erratic behavior and alleged threats. She reportedly stated that Howard, who has bipolar disorder, should leave the residence, and she reiterated this sentiment to authorities during a follow-up visit.

The day before the murders, Howard contacted police alleging a threat from Austin at gunpoint, a statement he retracted later. He also relayed to officials about receiving a 30-day eviction notice from Austin. Despite denying the presence of firearms when questioned by Mental Health officials, no guns were found in the home during a search.

Howard remains detained in Missouri, pending an extradition hearing to face charges in Kansas.
