MAUSTON, WI – A journey across state lines and a trail of unanswered questions have brought a small Wisconsin town into the spotlight after a man was accused of killing his elderly father before taking off in a vintage car.
Authorities say Jacob Sanders, 34, is facing first-degree intentional homicide charges after his father, Michael Sanders, 73, was found dead inside a Mauston motel room on January 21. The violent nature of the crime and the suspect’s alleged actions before and after the incident have sent shockwaves through the local community.
The investigation began far from Wisconsin’s wintery roads. Law enforcement officials in Vigo County, Indiana, stopped Jacob Sanders in his father’s 1989 Chevrolet Caprice during a routine check. It was during this traffic stop that deputies noticed blood on Jacob’s hand, raising suspicions about his story. He claimed to be traveling to Tennessee to honor his grandmother, but authorities were unable to reach his father for verification.
Back in Mauston, police arrived at the Willows Motel, where Michael Sanders had been living. The encounter quickly turned somber as officers discovered the 73-year-old dead, his body revealing more than two dozen stab wounds, including severe injuries to his hands, neck and face. The brutal scene suggested a struggle had taken place.
Investigators searching Jacob’s motel room recovered a Karambit knife—a weapon with a distinct curved blade—stained with what appeared to be blood. The close quarters in which father and son had been living painted a picture of a strained relationship, which family members later confirmed.
Interviews soon shed light on the deeper discord in the Sanders family. Michael’s daughter told officers that her brother’s rocky relationship with their father often resulted in fierce arguments and resentment. She described Jacob’s habit of treating his father poorly and noted that the two had a confrontation just the day before police discovered the elder Sanders’ body.
Officers were told that a recent dispute centered on something as small as a pointed finger, which Jacob allegedly called a “trigger” for his anger. Longstanding grievances, frustration and animosity seemed to fuel the family dynamic, investigators noted.
The case took another turn when authorities found out Jacob Sanders was listed as the sole beneficiary on his father’s life insurance policy, though the family had reportedly been attempting to change the arrangement. An autopsy later confirmed Michael Sanders suffered 26 stab wounds, including slashes that nearly severed his ear and digits—a sign, authorities say, of possible defensive actions during the attack.
