CARROLLTON TOWNSHIP, MI – An alleged assault that led to the hospitalization of Kelley LaLonde has gained a new dimension as the 35-year-old has now died, potentially elevating charges against her accused assailant.
Kelley LaLonde was pronounced dead on May 26 after enduring months in critical condition at a hospital. Her case drew public attention after she was discovered in a perilous state last September—leading to current charges against Jonathan M. Zieroff, 30.
Originally, Zieroff faced charges of assault with intent to murder due to the severity of LaLonde’s injuries, which included brain bleeding. A respirator supported her for months, and her condition prompted an additional charge of torture on May 14 after she was declared brain-dead.
LaLonde, a mother to three children aged 14, 11, and 3, was remembered warmly. Known for her joyful spirit, LaLonde had a passion for singing and dancing, was an avid fan of classic television, especially “I Love Lucy,” and admired Elvis Presley. She was also known for her love of Michigan Football, which she often enjoyed with friends and family.
Her demise now prompts a reevaluation of the legal charges, pending autopsy and toxicology results to clarify the cause of death. Prosecutors may take about three weeks to decide if further charges against Zieroff are warranted, according to Saginaw County officials.
The case began when LaLonde’s mother reported her missing last September, citing concerns over unreturned calls and her failure to appear at work. She was found unresponsive at a residence on North Monroe Street; the scene was grim, with LaLonde lying in distressing conditions.
LaLonde had suffered extensive physical trauma, evident from bruises and fractures. These findings corroborated statements made by her mother, who noted previous incidents of bruising allegedly caused by Zieroff.
Zieroff was not present when police arrived but was apprehended shortly after being located via his cell phone near his home. His mother reportedly gave inconsistent accounts of her son’s explanations regarding LaLonde’s injuries. Zieroff currently remains in custody at Saginaw County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Initially, charges against him included aggravated domestic violence and assault with intent to do great bodily harm. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 3.
