LANCASTER, SC – Authorities in Lancaster have placed a local man in custody after uncovering what investigators describe as a harrowing case of captivity and abuse, with four people allegedly held in a basement for years under restricted and punishing conditions.
Donnie Ray Birchfield, Jr., 35, faces a series of felony charges, including false imprisonment, exploitation and abuse of vulnerable adults, domestic violence, and financial crimes. The accusations surfaced after police responded to an unattended death at a residence on Churchill Drive in late July, leading to a broader investigation that revealed alleged long-term mistreatment of multiple victims.
According to court documents, one of the individuals died while still in the home. Birchfield was acting as the primary caregiver for the married couple, but the circumstances of their prior relationship remain unclear. Authorities allege that the surviving husband was denied adequate food and medical care over an extended period.
In addition to the couple, two other women are alleged to have suffered abuse in the same residence. Investigators state that Birchfield was in relationships with both women; one began living at the house in September 2024, while the other had reportedly been there since 2015.
The suspect is accused of confining the victims in the basement, granting permission for basic activities such as eating or using the restroom, and controlling their means of communication to prevent outside contact. Reports indicate that the defendant maintained tight control over the victims’ cell phones, blocking any opportunity to reach for help.
Law enforcement officials assert that one of the women endured repeated physical violence and threats. Allegations include episodes of strangulation, which engendered intense fear for her safety. Details from the investigation also suggest Birchfield may have threatened at least one victim by referencing personal experience in hiding a body, compounding their fear and isolation.
Financial exploitation is also central to the case. Investigators say Birchfield used the couple’s financial accounts to make dozens of purchases for his personal benefit, primarily through online retailers. Beginning as early as 2021, authorities have documented at least $2,000 in unauthorized expenditures, escalating sharply in 2025. In just the first eight months of this year, records indicate that Birchfield withdrew over $11,800 from the couple’s accounts to cover his own debts.
With the investigation ongoing, officials anticipate the possibility of further charges as they continue gathering evidence. Birchfield’s arrest came on August 1, less than a week after the disturbing discoveries were made inside the home.
He is currently held without bond at the Lancaster County Detention Center. The fate and condition of the surviving victims have not been publicly disclosed, but law enforcement say support services are being provided as the investigation progresses.
