MARIETTA, GA – A Georgia man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his girlfriend, Melinda Jolly, in her Marietta home. The Cobb County District Attorney’s Office announced that 42-year-old Charles Franklin Cook was convicted of felony murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children.
The case unfolded after Jolly’s body was discovered by a family member during a welfare check on January 17, 2024. Police officers, upon responding to the scene, confirmed the suspicious nature of the death and immediately involved the Major Crimes Unit of the Cobb County Police Department.
Jolly had recently relocated from California to Georgia in search of a fresh start after the death of her husband. She was a mother to four children, including young twins, and moved to be closer to her family. Despite her hope for a new beginning, her family revealed Jolly had entered an abusive relationship, which led them to request periodic welfare checks on her and her children.
The tragic discovery of her death came only two days after the last police welfare check, on January 15. Investigators later concluded that Jolly succumbed to multiple blunt force injuries to her head and neck, implicating Cook as the primary suspect.
Witnesses reported seeing Cook leaving Jolly’s residence around the time of her murder. Following a police alert, deputies in Okaloosa County, Florida, apprehended Cook in the parking lot of a grocery store in Crestview on January 18.
Jolly’s loved ones described her as a generous and loving person. They mourn her loss deeply, remembering her as a dedicated mother, a cherished family member, and a bright presence with an infectious smile.
Cook’s criminal past includes an arrest in October when police found one of Jolly’s children locked inside a hot car. Officers had to forcibly enter the vehicle to rescue the distressed child. The outcome of those charges is currently unclear.
This case has cast light on the severe consequences of domestic violence, reminding communities of the essential need for vigilance and support for those at risk. Cook remains in custody, awaiting extradition to Georgia to face his charges.
