MARIETTA, GA – The life of a 5-year-old boy came to a tragic end this week after what authorities described as prolonged abuse inside a Cobb County home. The child, who has not been named by officials, died Wednesday at a local hospital, days after police found him unresponsive with significant injuries.
Officers were called to a residence on Ramona Street Sunday following a 911 emergency call. When they arrived, investigators said they discovered the young boy with visible wounds that raised immediate suspicion of mistreatment. He was transported urgently for medical care, but died two days later from his injuries.
According to information released by the Marietta Police Department, the boy’s body showed signs consistent with repeated trauma. Initial findings presented evidence that he endured physical abuse over an extended period, culminating in fatal injuries.
Detectives allege that the child’s father, Michael Horn, 31, was responsible for inflicting the severe injuries that led to his son’s death. Arrest warrants accuse Horn of causing blunt force trauma resulting in internal bleeding, including on the brain. The abuse reportedly unfolded over at least five months.
Authorities also charged Alexiss Eitrem, Horn’s 31-year-old girlfriend, with child cruelty. Investigators believe Eitrem allowed the ongoing abuse to continue, failing to intervene or seek help as the boy suffered.
Both Horn and Eitrem were taken into custody early Monday. They are currently being held without bond at the Cobb County Jail while the investigation continues. Horn faces aggravated assault and multiple counts of child cruelty, while Eitrem is charged with several counts of child cruelty connected to her alleged role in failing to protect the victim.
Police stated that the abuse occurred in the presence of the couple’s four other children, heightening concern for their wellbeing. The remaining children’s condition and their current custody status have not been made public.
The community has reacted with shock and grief in the aftermath of the child’s death. Neighbors described a sense of disbelief and sorrow, expressing sympathy for the surviving children and the young life lost.
Law enforcement officials remarked that the evidence of trauma was unmistakable and heartbreaking. The investigation is ongoing as Cobb County authorities work to determine the circumstances that led up to the repeated mistreatment of the boy.
No further details about prior warnings or involvement by social services have been released. Police continue to urge anyone with information about the situation to come forward as they seek answers and justice for the victim.
