CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Authorities have charged a Macomb County man with involuntary manslaughter and vulnerable adult abuse after his elderly father died from dehydration last fall. Investigators allege Michael Stirling, 51, neglected to provide essential care, ultimately leading to the death of his bedridden father.
The incident came to light on November 3, 2024, when police responded to a Nicke Street home after a neighbor reported seeing Stirling acting confused and trying to access his own house. Officers assisted Stirling inside and, while at the residence, decided to check on 77-year-old James Stirling, discovering him deceased.
According to the Macomb County medical examiner, James Stirling died from dehydration, and his manner of death was ruled a homicide. The extended investigation that followed resulted in charges against his son, who had acted as his live-in caretaker at the time of the incident.
Authorities said Michael Stirling provided conflicting accounts about the circumstances leading up to his father’s death. Initially, Stirling claimed to have last seen his father the day before the police visit. He later changed his statement, telling officers he last saw his father on October 30 and had arranged for someone else to provide care in his absence. Police have since been unable to locate the supposed substitute caregiver or verify the information provided.
Macomb County prosecutors announced charges last week, including one count each of involuntary manslaughter, vulnerable adult abuse, and habitual offender status due to a prior offense. Stirling was arraigned Wednesday in 41B District Court and subsequently transferred to a mental health facility for further evaluation.
The stark circumstances surrounding James Stirling’s death shocked neighbors and drew attention to the risks facing vulnerable seniors. Local officials emphasized their commitment to safeguarding elderly residents and prosecuting cases involving significant breaches of trust and duty.
In the wake of the tragedy, James Stirling was remembered by friends and family as a kind individual who cherished his loved ones. His obituary described him as someone who enjoyed spending time with family and would be missed dearly.
Details about the conditions inside the Stirling residence or additional evidence have not been released as the investigation continues. Prosecutors have set Stirling’s bond at $250,000, to be enacted should he be discharged from the mental health facility.
Michael Stirling currently does not appear on the Macomb County Jail roster. His next court appearance, a probable cause conference, is set for August 18. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 19 years in prison, with additional time possible based on sentencing enhancements linked to prior offenses.
Officials have not disclosed further comments pending ongoing proceedings and the continued review of evidence.
