52-year-old Kansas woman shot by her husband who also kills their 22-year-old son because they laughed at him

LENEXA, KS – A Johnson County man will spend at least the next five decades in prison after admitting to killing his wife, adult son, and a neighbor’s dog during a violent night last fall.

Todd Donovan, 54, received a “Hard 50” sentence Tuesday after entering guilty pleas in April to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of animal cruelty. The sentence requires Donovan to serve 50 years before becoming eligible for parole, a measure in Kansas law designed for the most severe criminal convictions.

Authorities say Donovan’s rampage unfolded on November 1, when police responded to an armed disturbance call at the Donovan residence in the 7900 block of Hallet Street. Lenexa officers arrived around 8:20 p.m. after reports of gunfire. They heard shots coming from inside the house as they approached.

Negotiators spent hours attempting to coax Donovan out of the home, but he refused to surrender peacefully. At one point, Donovan briefly exited the residence with his hands raised and tossed a rifle from his garage, before returning inside. According to court documents, he told police he needed medication to calm himself, later admitting to ingesting approximately 30 Ambien tablets.

During the standoff, Donovan communicated with officers by phone, but eventually went silent. Authorities reported hearing him snoring on the line after he stopped responding. The crisis intensified as backup from three additional law enforcement agencies arrived to assist in the barricade situation.

After more than five hours, a specialized unit forced entry into the home at around 1:50 a.m. Officers found Donovan and transported him to a hospital for a possible drug overdose. Inside the house, they discovered the bodies of Sheila Donovan, 52, and Tyler Donovan, 22, both killed by gunshot wounds. Investigators also learned that Donovan had entered a neighbor’s property during the chaos and fatally shot the family’s dog.

According to accounts provided in court, Donovan also called his brother during the episode and threatened self-harm, stating he had just shot his family because he believed they were laughing at him as he pretended to sleep. When officers asked Donovan who lived at the home, he reportedly replied, “A couple of traitors, I guess.” He told police he was “armed to the teeth” but did not intend to shoot at authorities, expressing disbelief at what he perceived as his family turning against him.

Kansas’s “Hard 50” statute establishes a mandatory 50-year minimum sentence for premeditated first-degree murder. The law was designed to ensure that individuals convicted of particularly heinous crimes are not eligible for parole for half a century.

Sheila Donovan is remembered fondly by friends and family for her humor, warmth, and deep faith. Her obituary describes her as someone who brought joy to every gathering and took special pride in her son, Tyler.

Tyler Donovan was celebrated for his generosity and willingness to help others, rarely seeking assistance for himself. His selflessness left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Donovan remains in custody following sentencing and is expected to serve his sentence at a Kansas Department of Corrections facility.
