PERRY, Iowa – A tragic shooting at a high school in Perry, Iowa, resulted in the death of a sixth-grade student and left five others injured. Among the injured are four students from the school and the 56-year-old principal. The gunman, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Before the shooting occurred, Butler had posted videos on social media, causing alarm among students and authorities. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation confirmed that the gunman had posted concerning content on social media just before the incident.
Upon arrival at the scene, police encountered students and faculty seeking shelter and running for safety. The entire incident took place before classes had begun, during a breakfast program that students from other nearby schools were attending. One of the victims was a sixth-grade student from Perry Middle School.
Law enforcement secured the school and found an improvised explosive device, which was safely disposed of, along with the gunman’s weapons – a shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Evidence suggests that the gunman acted alone.
Investigations into the shooter’s motives are ongoing and remain a priority for authorities.
