MAPLETON, MN – A Minnesota man has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of his father in a perplexing series of events that unfolded earlier this week. Troy Blaine Almhjeld, 47, is accused of fatally stabbing his father, 71-year-old Blaine Lars Almhjeld, at their shared home before attempting to flee the scene.
The incident came to light in the early hours of June 3 when officers responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle near the Terrace View Gold Course, approximately 80 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Troy Almhjeld, had reportedly veered off the road and was seen attempting to hike a ride while seemingly intoxicated.
Search efforts in the immediate vicinity initially failed to locate him. However, checking the vehicle’s registration revealed it belonged to Blaine Almhjeld, prompting authorities to investigate the address linked to it.
Upon entering the Mapleton residence, officials discovered the elder Almhjeld suffering from multiple stab wounds, alongside indications of blunt force trauma. Tragically, he was declared dead at the scene.
It quickly became evident that the victim’s son, Troy, lived there, too, leading law enforcement to focus their search efforts on him. While searching near the site where his car was found, Troy Almhjeld approached officers. He surrendered to deputies without incident.
Reports provided more insight into the case, noting the home’s door was ajar upon first responders’ arrival, revealing a bloody scene inside. A kitchen knife, which matched the wounds inflicted on Blaine Almhjeld, was recovered from the house.
During his arrest, Troy alleged that he had been driven off the road by another vehicle, citing a confrontation with his father on the night of the murder. His bizarre statements included inquiries about his father’s condition, as well as claims of enigmatic and troubling events leading up to the incident.
Troy Almhjeld is currently detained and is expected to make a court appearance on Thursday to face the charges against him.
