74-year-old diabetic man is bedbound and daughter doesn’t give him insulin and neglects him until his spine is exposed

KNOXVILLE, TN – Shadows of neglect and suffering loomed over a Knoxville residence after a 74-year-old man was found in a grave state, his health depleted to a shocking degree. Officials say the man’s daughter, entrusted with his care, is now accused of abandoning her duties and leaving her father teetering on the edge of survival.

Authorities arrested Misty McDaniel, 42, charging her with aggravated neglect of an elderly or vulnerable adult after discovering her father’s dire condition. Investigators say the man, rendered bedridden following a stroke nearly a decade ago, had been worsening under her watch for months.

On January 2, the elderly man was rushed to the hospital, where medical professionals uncovered the stark evidence of neglect. His blood sugar had soared beyond 600, a critical level that posed the imminent risk of a diabetic coma, according to medical assessments.

What the hospital staff found next painted a bleak picture. Extensive pressure ulcers and deep bed sores had ravaged his lower back and other parts of his body. The neglect had become so severe that three vertebrae were exposed, a sign of prolonged suffering and absence of care. Physicians acted swiftly, admitting him to critical care and moving forward with multiple surgeries to cut away dead and rotting tissue.

Court records outline that McDaniel had ceased taking her father to regular doctor visits for an extended period, despite his reliance on medication for diabetes and other ailments. Police state that a stash of prescribed diabetes medication—still full and untouched—was discovered at the home.

McDaniel and her husband had been designated caregivers, but investigators believe the man’s health severely deteriorated over the previous six months. Evidence suggests medication was intentionally withheld, allowing the elderly man’s condition to spiral unchecked.

Following her arrest on January 17, McDaniel was booked into custody, her bond set at $75,000. The elderly man remains hospitalized and under intensive medical care.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the man’s injuries and to evaluate the roles of others involved in his care. Authorities stress that elder abuse remains a hidden crisis that unfolds behind closed doors, demanding vigilance from neighbors and family members alike.

Officials urge anyone witnessing signs of neglect or maltreatment toward elderly individuals to contact local authorities. The investigation in Knoxville is ongoing, with court proceedings for McDaniel set in the coming weeks.
