77-year-old Florida woman stabbed in the heart by son who shoots her in the head after she calls 911 cops say

Jerry Lea Vaughn, 77, was described as a generous neighbor who had opened her home to family.

WILDWOOD, Fla. — Neighbors grieving a 77-year-old Sumter County woman said she was a devoted grandmother and friend after authorities accused her son of stabbing and shooting her inside her Wildwood-area home.

The death of Jerry Lea Vaughn has drawn attention not only because of the charge against her son, 51-year-old Derek DeWayne Vaughn, but also because of the household around the killing. Neighbors said Jerry Vaughn had taken in Derek Vaughn, his wife and their two sons at the home along County Road 116. Police said they found Derek Vaughn outside near the front of the residence with his wife and children after Jerry Vaughn called 911 during the attack. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is now handling the investigation.

Friends and neighbors described Jerry Vaughn as a steady presence in the neighborhood before her death Monday night, April 6. Mary Arnold, a friend and neighbor, said Jerry Vaughn was always ready to help others and cared deeply about the boys in her family. Another neighbor said Jerry Vaughn often attended family events and birthday parties and was known for small acts of kindness, including buying treats for neighborhood children. “She was the light in so many people’s lives, and she will be missed,” the neighbor said. Arnold said Jerry Vaughn had faced health issues recently, but her concern remained focused on her family and being present for them.

The police account of her final moments is stark. Reports citing the arrest report said Wildwood police were called around 8:30 p.m. after Jerry Vaughn reached 911 and told a dispatcher her son had stabbed her. “Help me, help me, my son just stabbed me, he is coming to kill me,” she said, according to the report. Officers went to the County Road 116 home and encountered Derek Vaughn outside. Police said his wife and two children were also outside when officers arrived. Authorities have not publicly said whether any of them witnessed the attack or what they told investigators. No injuries to them were reported in the accounts reviewed.

Once officers detained Derek Vaughn, police said, he made statements acknowledging that he had killed his mother. When officers tightened or adjusted his handcuffs, he allegedly complained that one cuff was uncomfortable despite admitting the killing. Investigators said he later described stabbing Jerry Vaughn and then getting his late father’s gun after the stabbing did not kill her. Reports say he told police that God had told him to shoot her in the head. Villages-News reported that he admitted using a Damascus bladed butcher knife and a Beretta handgun. It also reported that Jerry Vaughn was stabbed in the heart and shot in the head. Emergency medical workers took her to UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital in The Villages, where she was pronounced dead.

For neighbors, the allegations collided with what they knew of Jerry Vaughn’s home life and faith. Arnold rejected Derek Vaughn’s alleged religious claim, saying, “Jesus Christ, my savior, did not tell that young man to take his mother’s life.” She said she did not know who Derek Vaughn believed he was listening to, but she did not accept the explanation. Another neighbor said the killing was hard to process because Jerry Vaughn was so tied to her family. Reports said Derek Vaughn allegedly called his mother satan, referred to her as the devil and said God was testing him. Investigators have not released a fuller explanation of motive, and no public defense account was included in the initial reports.

The official record also includes a mental health evaluation. Local reports said Derek Vaughn was evaluated and was found to understand right from wrong. Authorities also said he had no prior criminal history. Those details do not answer the questions neighbors raised about what happened inside the home before the emergency call. They do set the stage for how the criminal case may proceed. Prosecutors and defense attorneys may later address the statements attributed to Vaughn, the finding from the evaluation and any further medical or psychological records. For now, the public record says only that he was evaluated, that he was found to know right from wrong and that investigators treated his statements as part of their evidence.

Derek Vaughn was taken to the Sumter County jail and held without bond. Reports said he was charged with dangerous and depraved murder without premeditation and a weapons offense for firing in an occupied dwelling. The weapons charge reflects the allegation that the shooting took place inside a home where other people were connected to the scene. The case began with Wildwood police, but it was turned over to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office after officials determined the property was in county jurisdiction. That transfer means future investigative updates are expected to come from the sheriff’s office or from court filings in Sumter County.

The grief around the case has centered heavily on Jerry Vaughn’s grandchildren. Arnold said Jerry Vaughn loved and raised the boys and said the killing would shape the rest of their lives. Another neighbor recalled wanting to text Jerry Vaughn after her death because the loss still did not feel real. Those memories have become part of the public account of a case that otherwise rests on police reports, a 911 call and alleged admissions. The contrast is sharp: a woman remembered for opening her door to others died in the same home, and the person charged is the son neighbors said she had welcomed there.

Derek Vaughn was expected in court Wednesday, April 8, for an initial appearance. The next steps include formal court filings, appointment or confirmation of defense counsel, future hearing dates and any review of his bond status. Jerry Vaughn’s neighbors, meanwhile, continued describing her as a caring woman whose absence was still settling over the community.
