8-year-old little girl starved to death at 26 pounds by adopted mom and her boyfriend who smashed her toes with hammer

SPOKANE, WA – An 8-year-old girl endured months of unimaginable suffering before her life was cut short, her silent cries for help revealed only after her tragic death shook authorities and her family to the core.

Meela Rose Miller weighed just 26 pounds when emergency workers finally discovered the truth behind her disappearance. The young girl’s final months were marked by starvation and repeated physical abuse, leaving deep scars and injuries on her small frame. Investigators later learned that Meela’s caregivers—her adoptive mother, Mandie Miller, and Miller’s boyfriend Aleksander Kurmoyarov—resorted to extreme and cruel measures to “discipline” her, including restraining her with zip ties and smashing her toes with a hammer.

Born to Mandie Miller’s biological sister, Meela was adopted as a niece-turned-daughter, entering a home that should have offered stability and love. Instead, neighbors rarely saw the child outside or interacting with others. Prosecutors revealed that home security footage, discovered well after Meela’s death, captured chilling evidence of hours-long restraint and relentless physical abuse.

Rather than contact authorities after Meela’s death in September 2022, Miller and Kurmoyarov kept her body in their Spokane residence for months. By December, the couple traveled more than 1,100 miles to Mitchell, South Dakota, placing Meela’s body in a coffin stowed inside a rental trailer. Their journey ended at a funeral home, where their inability to provide a valid death certificate raised alarm bells for staff.

Police were alerted, and the ensuing investigation led to the couple’s arrest and extradition back to Washington. In court, officials detailed the prolonged starvation and abuse that ultimately caused Meela’s death. Evidence, including video recordings, painted a harrowing picture of the girl’s final days—days spent in fear and isolation.

On Friday, Mandie Miller, 36, was sentenced to 32 years in prison, a sentence exceeding the prosecution’s original recommendation. Miller had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of homicide by abuse, assault of a child, and unlawful imprisonment. Aleksander Kurmoyarov, 31, also pleaded guilty to his role in the crime and is awaiting sentencing.

During Friday’s hearing, Meela’s biological mother and Mandie’s sister, Andrea Miller, directly addressed the court, speaking through tears about the pain of losing a child who bore the name of another beloved family member. Despite the harrowing nature of her daughter’s death, Andrea Miller told the court she forgave her sister, expressing sorrow for the cycle of trauma that had engulfed their family.

The presiding judge, noting the gravity of the crimes and the vulnerability of the victim, described Meela’s treatment as the ultimate betrayal by a guardian. The court emphasized that every parent’s fundamental duty is to protect and nurture their children—a responsibility that was catastrophically breached.

Mandie Miller, before receiving her sentence, described her own troubled upbringing but admitted her actions could not be justified or excused. She acknowledged the pain and loss her choices inflicted on her daughter, expressing belated regret.

As legal proceedings draw to a close, the story of Meela Rose Miller serves as a painful reminder of the responsibilities entrusted to caregivers and the importance of vigilance within every community to protect its most vulnerable members.
