Phoenix, Arizona — Prosecutors are preparing to pursue the death penalty for two suspects accused of the gruesome murder of an exotic dancer earlier this year. Cudjoe Young, 29, and Sencere Hayes, 23, face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, following the violent death of 22-year-old Mercedes Vega.
In court documents filed this week, authorities from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office described the alleged crime as being committed in an “especially heinous, cruel or depraved manner.” The charges indicate that the defendants purportedly sought to silence Vega to prevent her cooperation with law enforcement, either through fear or retribution related to her testimony.
Young and Hayes are also charged with kidnapping, arson, theft, and armed robbery with a deadly weapon. Hayes faces an additional count for hindering prosecution. Both suspects remain in custody, with Young’s bond set at $2.2 million and Hayes’s at $4 million, according to jail records. Neither suspect’s legal team has provided immediate comments regarding the case.
A third individual, Jared Gray, 26, also charged with first-degree murder in connection to the case, is not facing the death penalty. Authorities have not clarified why Gray is exempt from such proceedings. He is currently not in custody in Maricopa County and is instead serving time on an unrelated theft charge in Georgia, stemming from a revoked probation.
The grim details of Vega’s murder reveal that authorities believe she was abducted from her apartment’s parking garage on April 16, 2023. Investigators later discovered her burned, beaten, and shot body in an abandoned vehicle along an interstate west of Phoenix. The circumstances surrounding her death have garnered significant public attention and concern.
Young is already awaiting trial for a separate case involving allegations of a previous armed robbery against Vega in 2020, where he reportedly attempted to rob another dancer weeks later. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges as well.
While the connections between the three defendants remain unclear, an affidavit supporting Gray’s arrest highlights ties to Chattanooga, Tennessee. This document points to evidence linking Young to the vehicle discovered with Vega’s body, while forensic analysis links both Gray and Hayes to the scene of the crime.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case continues to spotlight issues of violence against women and the need for protective measures for individuals involved in criminal cases. The community watches closely as it seeks justice for the young dancer whose life was cut tragically short.
