Armed Home Invasion in Melbourne Leaves Man Seriously Injured; Four Arrests Made in Shocking Attack

Gladstone Park, Australia — A violent home invasion has led to the arrest of four individuals, including three teenagers, in the northwest area of Melbourne. The incident, described as shocking and brutal, left a 60-year-old man hospitalized with serious injuries.

The assault occurred early on July 24 when five assailants allegedly armed with firearms and knives forced their way into a residence on Trentham Drive. The attackers confronted Kemal Akbulut and his cousin, Birsel Akbulut, who were inside the home at the time.

According to reports, when Kemal attempted to confront the intruders, they assaulted him, inflicting multiple injuries through violent means, including shooting, stabbing, and striking him with a hammer. The suspects fled the scene in a white Haval SUV, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

On Wednesday, police apprehended a 17-year-old from Mill Park in Bundaberg, Queensland. Authorities are in the process of seeking his extradition back to Victoria. Following this initial arrest, police conducted five search warrants across various locations, including three homes in Mill Park, Meadow Heights, and Tarneit, where they arrested additional suspects: a 16-year-old boy and two men, aged 21 and 18.

The investigation has revealed that the assault was likely targeted, with detectives noting that the victims seemed to have been unintentional targets in a search for someone’s alleged connection to criminal activity. CCTV footage from the scene shows the harrowing moment of the assault, during which Kemal can be heard pleading for his life while the attackers demanded money.

Detective Inspector Adam Tilley described the crime as particularly alarming, given the physical and psychological toll it could have on victims. He emphasized the commitment of the Armed Crime Squad to bring those responsible to justice, stating that the community’s safety is paramount. “While this incident appears to be targeted,” Tilley added, “we will do everything in our power to hold those involved accountable and to reduce gun violence in our neighborhoods.”

Victim Birsel Akbulut stressed that they were innocent bystanders caught up in a dangerous situation. She expressed concern for her family’s safety and conveyed the fear stemming from this violent act.

As investigations continue, police remain vigilant and proactive, aiming to prevent further incidents of this nature and ensuring the safety of local residents.
