Armed Israeli Settlers Launch Coordinated Assault on Palestinian Community in Jericho, Displacing Families and Destroying Homes

Jericho, West Bank — A Palestinian community in the village of Deir al-Dik al-Tahta faced violence and displacement on February 11 when approximately 30 masked Israeli settlers launched a concerted attack, reportedly supported by armed escorts from the Israeli government. The assault, which lasted for hours, culminated in the theft of numerous livestock and property, effectively displacing families from their homes.

Witnesses reported the settlers arrived in all-terrain vehicles and tractors, stealing between 120 and 150 sheep, along with a car and a tractor. Despite calls for assistance to both Palestinian and Israeli authorities, no help arrived. Armed settlers threatened community members, including children, while resorting to physical violence. At least ten Palestinians sustained injuries from beatings, with one needing stitches after a severe assault.

The settlers caused extensive property damage, bulldozing 19 structures, including 15 homes. Following the attack, 15 families—comprising 15 children—were forced to seek temporary shelter. Fearful of returning to their now-damaged homes, the families are left to cope with the aftermath of the attack, amidst fears of further violence.

Above the community, an illegal outpost and a military installation loom, highlighting a growing tension in the region. For the past two years, settlers, in collaboration with the Israeli military, have increasingly intensified efforts to displace Palestinian communities. As violence escalates, accountability remains elusive, further complicating the already dire situation for many families in the area.

The Tel al-Samrat region, located within the Jordan Valley, is an agriculturally rich area long sought after by Israeli authorities for annexation since 1967. In recent years, violence by settlers has surged, leading to demolitions of both residential and agricultural structures while large swathes of land have been declared “state land” or designated as “military firing zones.” Such designations severely restrict Palestinian access to traditional lands.

Recent changes to land registration laws further entrench the difficulties faced by Palestinians. These rules ease the acquisition of Palestinian land for illegal settlements, compounding the challenges of displacement and loss of livelihood that many communities are currently enduring.

As tensions heighten and violent incidents continue to rise, the struggle for justice and basic human rights remains a daunting challenge for the affected population. The ongoing conflict not only displaces communities but also raises serious concerns regarding the future of Palestinian presence in the West Bank.
