Dallas police announced Thursday that a suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident earlier this month that resulted in two fatalities and several injuries. The violence erupted during a party in East Dallas and has led to significant community concern regarding safety.
Twenty-year-old Alexis Armenta surrendered to U.S. marshals and faces a capital murder charge. He is expected to be booked into the Dallas County jail. Police reported that one of the victims, Daniel Cojulum Villanueva, also 20, succumbed to his injuries on October 21. Another victim, Jacob Cuellar, 21, was fatally shot early in the morning hours on October 12.
Witnesses reported that the shooting occurred in a parking lot near the 8300 block of La Prada Drive around 1:30 a.m. on that Sunday morning. Prior to the gunfire, an altercation broke out between Armenta and the victims, which escalated dramatically. A witness who sustained a leg injury during the incident indicated that a party had taken place at a nearby bar before the chaos ensued.
Surveillance footage reviewed by law enforcement captured the moments leading up to the shooting. The video showed Cuellar confronting Armenta, which prompted an argument. Authorities stated that Cuellar physically assaulted Armenta before gunfire erupted. The footage indicates that Armenta drew a firearm and opened fire toward Cuellar as individuals nearby scattered for safety.
The police affidavit revealed that Armenta continued to shoot while attempting to flee the scene. Notably, the footage did not show any other individuals discharging weapons during the incident. Investigators are still working to ascertain the motive behind the dispute that ignited the violence.
Dallas police emphasized that public safety remains a priority, as they continue their investigation into this case. Community leaders are calling for increased measures to curb violence and ensure a safer environment for residents. The police department has urged anyone with additional information related to the events of that night to come forward.
