Assault: Teenage brothers remanded in custody after alleged attack in county Longford

Longford, Ireland – Two teenage brothers have been remanded to Oberstown Children’s Detention Centre after appearing in court charged with an alleged assault on a 17-year-old boy in county Longford on Saturday.

The pair, aged 17 and 16 respectively, were brought before Longford District Court following an incident at Edgeworthstown Train Station where a teenage boy was allegedly attacked. Detective Garda Orla Geraghty provided evidence of arrest, charge, and caution before Judge Bernadette Owens, revealing that the brothers remained silent when charged with assault causing harm.

Defense solicitor, Bríd Mimnagh, indicated that there would be no bail application at the moment, but a request would be made in the future. Inspector Declan McGlynn stated that the State would vehemently oppose bail if requested.

In light of the circumstances, Judge Owens decided to remand both teenagers into custody until their next appearance at Oberstown Children’s Detention Centre on April 16. She also ordered that the older brother, who has a cardiac condition, receive all necessary medical attention while in custody.

The incident has sparked concerns about youth violence in Longford, with community members calling for stricter measures to address such behavior. The case highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of young people within the justice system and the need for appropriate medical care for detainees.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities will continue to gather evidence and assess the impact of the assault on the victim. The court proceedings serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in handling cases involving juveniles and the importance of upholding justice while considering the welfare of all parties involved.
