Aurora Man in Custody for Break-In at Store Where Local Businessman Was Killed

DENVER, CO – A 39-year-old man from Aurora, Colorado is currently in custody in Jefferson County for his involvement in a burglary at a store where Aurora businessman Peter Arguello was tragically killed during a robbery a month prior.

According to police, the man, Charles Robinson Shay, was already being tracked in connection with a stolen vehicle when he was seen outside Peter Damien Fine Jewelry and Antiques at around 5 a.m. on December 26th, the same store that had been emptied following the killing of its owner.

Evidence from a stolen vehicle helped lead investigators to Shay, whose DNA was found on flex cuffs used during the robbery that resulted in Arguello’s death. Shay has a criminal record, with previous arrests in Colorado for various offenses including theft, drug distribution, and DUI.

A police affidavit revealed that Shay admitted to attempting to break into the store on December 26th, but claimed he didn’t take anything because there was nothing there. He also stated that he was aware of the homicide and saw the burglary as a crime of opportunity. However, he remained silent after being informed that his DNA was a match for that found on the flex cuffs used during the robbery.

Shay is currently in custody on charges of aggravated motor vehicle theft and second-degree burglary, but has not been charged in connection with Peter Arguello’s killing, and information regarding the number of individuals involved in the robbery and murder has not been disclosed.

As police continue their investigation, it has been reported that two ball caps resembling those seen on surveillance footage from the store were discovered in the back of a burned pickup truck linked to the case. The fire department is located just a short distance from where the truck was found, and the ball caps were only partially burned.

The case continues to unfold as authorities work to bring justice for the late Peter Arguello and solve the burglary at his store.
