Bakersfield father beaten to death by his 49-year-old son during financial dispute

BAKERSFIELD, CA – A 49-year-old man was arrested and charged this week after authorities allege he killed his elderly father during a heated confrontation over an unpaid debt, then told investigators he felt justified in taking violent action.

Alfred Juarez Jr. faces multiple charges, including murder, elder abuse with serious injury, robbery, and carjacking, following the death of his father, 71-year-old Alfred Juarez Sr. According to court records, Juarez Jr. is currently being held without bail at the Kern County Jail, with a court appearance set for late October.

Police responded to a residence in southwest Bakersfield around 6:30 p.m. on October 13 after receiving a report about an unresponsive man. When officers arrived at the home on Chandler Way, they found the senior Juarez showing signs of physical trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the home, which they say captured the violent encounter between father and son. The video purportedly shows Juarez Sr. stepping outside his home, followed closely by his son. Investigators allege Juarez Jr. aggressively shoved open the screen door and struck his father in the head.

The confrontation escalated further when, according to police, Juarez Jr. forcibly removed his father’s car keys from his belt. At that moment, the older man grasped his chest and collapsed. Police said Juarez Jr. then left the property in his father’s car.

The younger Juarez was apprehended a short time later in neighboring Los Angeles County. During questioning, authorities say, he admitted to being upset over a $5,000 debt he claimed his father owed him. He told police that after being told to leave the residence, he returned to ensure the situation was resolved on his terms.

In interviews, Juarez Jr. allegedly showed little remorse, referencing a history of health issues that plagued his father, including multiple heart attacks. Investigators noted that the suspect was aware of his father’s fragile condition.

This is not the first time authorities have been called following tension between the two men. Police documents reference a previous incident in 2020, when a reported altercation involving Juarez Jr. resulted in his father suffering a heart attack.

Juarez Jr. remains in custody as the investigation continues, and formal charges are pending further review by prosecutors. The case has garnered attention in the Bakersfield community, raising concerns about elder abuse and the dangers of unresolved familial disputes.
