Coleraine, Northern Ireland — A 31-year-old barber remains in custody following a violent incident at a local bar, which occurred shortly before his arrest on serious sexual assault charges. Jamie Gurney, from The Meadow in Antrim, has been accused of raping a woman twice within a single day and faces additional allegations of sexual assault.
In a hearing at Coleraine Magistrates Court, Gurney confirmed his understanding of three charges related to incidents that reportedly took place on July 18. He is alleged to have engaged in non-consensual sexual acts with the victim. The case has garnered public attention, particularly due to the violent attack that Gurney allegedly endured shortly before his arrest.
Reports indicate that Gurney was assaulted by multiple individuals while in licensed premises in Antrim town. Following this incident, he was treated in a hospital for injuries before being taken into custody by law enforcement. A source familiar with the situation noted that Gurney was left in a severely injured state.
Investigators reported that they received a call regarding the assault in the early hours of July 19. Police arrived at the scene and subsequently arrested Gurney, who was also suspected of being in possession of an offensive weapon. During court proceedings, Detective Constable Blair indicated his belief that there is sufficient evidence to connect Gurney to the alleged offenses.
In a hearing, Gurney’s defense counsel, Jonathan Browne, confirmed that the police were amenable to granting bail, contingent upon finding a suitable residence for Gurney. Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop approved bail in the amount of £500 but stipulated that Gurney would not be released until a suitable address was confirmed. Furthermore, conditions attached to his bail include a prohibition on entering Antrim, contacting the alleged victim, and consuming alcohol.
The court has scheduled the next session for August 12, as the investigation into the case continues. The nature of the charges has raised significant concerns, highlighting ongoing issues surrounding sexual violence and public safety in the region. Gurney’s case exemplifies the complexities and challenges faced in addressing such serious allegations within the community.
