Bond Reduction Sought by Parents in Connection to Houston Twin Infants’ Death

Houston, Texas – Parents of twin infants who tragically passed away are seeking a reduction in their bond, as revealed by court documents. Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, are facing charges related to the death of their 5-week-old twins in October 2023. They are each charged with two counts of injury to a child-serious bodily injury, according to court records.

During a recent court appearance, the couple’s attorneys requested a decrease in their $750,000 bond for each case. Calderon’s bond reduction hearing is scheduled for Friday, while Vega’s hearing is set for late May.

The heart-wrenching incident began when Houston Police Department officers responded to a home on Linden Creek Lane, where the infants, identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, were found unresponsive by their father, Vega. Despite efforts to perform CPR, the premature infants did not survive.

Reports indicate that the babies were discovered lying on a sofa with discolored skin, multiple bruises, and contusions. Tragically, one of the infants had suffered multiple fractures. An autopsy later revealed that the infants had succumbed to multiple injuries caused by a blunt object.

Further investigation highlighted that the twins had not received medical check-ups since leaving the hospital. Calderon admitted to police that the babies had been ill but had not received medical attention. Both parents were subsequently identified as suspects and arrested without incident on Friday, April 19.

Family members revealed a troubling history, with claims of abuse by Vega towards Calderon. It was disclosed that Vega had been arrested two weeks prior for unlawfully restraining Calderon and was out on bond for possessing a controlled substance at the time of the tragic incident.

Despite allegations of physical harm, Calderon’s aunt believes she should be held accountable for the neglect that led to the discovery of malnourished infants with injuries that were days or weeks old.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community awaits further developments in this heartbreaking case that has shaken the local neighborhood.
