Seventeen-year-old Gwen Smith, a recent graduate of Bedford High School, was found fatally injured by her stepfather upon returning home that evening. Ryne Leist, 33, had previously served as the bowling club coach at the school and allegedly shot Smith multiple times before turning the gun on himself. Investigators labeled Smith’s death a homicide, while Leist’s death was ruled a suicide.
