Boyfriend dismembers 20-year-old Colorado woman with steak knife

FRISCO, CO – Friends and family of Griselda Amarilis Lopez-Racancoj are mourning a young mother whose life was violently taken in a case authorities are calling one of the most disturbing in recent memory.

The 20-year-old woman was discovered dead and dismembered inside her home in Frisco just after midnight on December 29. Police say her remains were hidden under a bed, an act that shocked both first responders and those who knew her.

Emergency personnel were called to the residence for what was initially reported as a medical emergency. When police arrived, Lopez-Racancoj’s body was found concealed in a white trash bag beneath the bed she shared with her boyfriend, Luis Antonio Mendez Hernandez, who is also the father of her child.

Loved ones described Lopez-Racancoj as a dedicated mother devoted to her young child, now left without her care. Those close to her said she recently made the difficult decision to end her relationship with Hernandez, a choice that may have played a tragic role in her death as investigators revealed she hadn’t been seen since a heated argument with him just days earlier.

According to court documents, two women living in the same home alerted authorities after discovering the body. One of Lopez-Racancoj’s roommates noticed Hernandez had fresh scratches on his neck and chest on the morning of the discovery, adding to suspicions.

Investigators recovered a bloodied steak knife from Hernandez’s closet, along with blood-stained pillows in the room, indicating a violent struggle. Authorities say blood patterns suggested the pillows had been used to smother someone.

Detectives also uncovered evidence that Hernandez attempted to deflect suspicion by texting friends and roommates, claiming Lopez-Racancoj was suicidal. When questioned about her whereabouts, Hernandez would not respond, further raising alarm among those in the home.

Later, during a police interview, Hernandez told officers that he had found Lopez-Racancoj unresponsive in bed. He chose not to call for help, instead hiding her body and researching how to dispose of it online. He also made statements that appeared to cast blame elsewhere, suggesting harassment by another man or suicide, but provided no credible evidence to support these claims.

Police allege Hernandez, 19, took deliberate steps to conceal the killing. He is now charged with multiple counts of murder and tampering with a body. The charges include first-degree murder after deliberation, first-degree murder with extreme indifference, and second-degree murder.

Hernandez remains in Summit County Jail with bond set at $5 million. Authorities have not released information about upcoming court proceedings. Meanwhile, Lopez-Racancoj’s friends and family continue to seek answers and remember her as a young woman whose life was cut tragically short.
