California doctor found dead inside her burning mansion was in the middle of bitter divorce

SAN MARINO, CA – Authorities have arrested and charged a San Marino man in connection with the death of his estranged wife, a respected physician found dead following a suspicious house fire earlier this year, officials announced.

Yoon Lai, 62, faces charges of murder and arson after investigators determined that the death of Dr. Irene Gaw-Gonzalo, 56, was not caused solely by the fire that engulfed their home on January 6. Prosecutors allege Lai set the blaze in an effort to hide his alleged role in her death.

The grim discovery unfolded when firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at the couple’s San Marino residence shortly before 10 a.m. Investigators found Gaw-Gonzalo’s body on the doorstep, severely burned, but also showing signs of additional trauma inconsistent with a fire-related fatality.

Medical examiners were unable to pinpoint the exact cause of her death due to the extent of the burns and initially ruled the manner of her death undetermined. However, once detectives found evidence of injuries unrelated to the blaze, the investigation shifted to homicide.

Authorities did not comment on a possible motive, but court and public records indicate the couple’s relationship had become contentious. They were in the midst of divorce proceedings at the time of the fatal incident. Gaw-Gonzalo had filed to dissolve their marriage for a second time in August 2024; her first petition dated back to 2003.

On the day of the fire, Lai told police he had just returned from dropping off the couple’s teenage twins at a baseball practice, only to discover the home in flames. But inconsistencies and evidence developed over the following months led detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau to treat him as a primary suspect.

After several months of investigation, including the execution of 25 search warrants, Lai was arrested on July 3. He pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment and remains held in custody on $2.25 million bail.

Dr. Gaw-Gonzalo was not only well-known in the medical community but also admired as a business leader and a mother. Neighbors described the couple’s relationship as strained in the months leading up to her death, but said the news still sent shockwaves through the quiet neighborhood.

District Attorney officials vowed to pursue the charges aggressively, saying they would work to ensure justice for the victim.

Lai’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 12 as the legal process continues.
