Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn Announces Run for Congress in Maryland’s 3rd District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Harry Dunn, a former U.S. Capitol Police Officer, has declared his candidacy for Congress in Maryland’s 3rd District. Dunn gained national attention for his role in defending the Capitol building from insurrectionists on January 6, 2021 and has since become an outspoken advocate for justice in the aftermath of the riot.

Dunn’s decision to run for Congress follows his resignation from the U.S. Capitol Police after 15 years of service. His Congressional campaign is aimed at filling the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. John Sarbanes in Maryland’s 3rd District, which encompasses Howard County, Annapolis, as well as parts of Anne Arundel and Carroll Counties.

A strong advocate for democracy, Dunn refers to the events of January 6 as a wake-up call and a threat to the nation’s foundational values. He has also been vocal about the need for accountability for those responsible for the Capitol Riot, emphasizing his dedication to defending democracy and the American way of life.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Dunn is also an author, having penned a book titled “Standing My Ground: A Capitol Police Officer’s Fight for Accountability and Good Trouble after January 6th.” His background includes a degree in Health Science from James Madison University and a strong connection to the values instilled by his family.

Dunn’s commitment to public service and his experiences with the Capitol Police position him as a compelling candidate in a crowded field of contenders for the Democratic nomination in Maryland’s 3rd District. With the primary election scheduled for May 15th, Dunn’s campaign is poised to be a significant focal point in the broader conversation about the future of democracy in America.
