Carjacking Suspect Faces Murder Charges After Good Samaritan Killed in Lumberton

LUMBERTON, N.C. – A tragic incident unfolded in Lumberton, North Carolina, when a good Samaritan lost his life while attempting to stop a carjacking. The victim, identified as Jonathan Adam Lecompte, 38, from Fayetteville, was fatally struck by the suspect involved in the carjacking, according to authorities.

Reports from Lumberton police indicate that 28-year-old Ricky Alex Driggers was responsible for stealing a vehicle and intentionally hitting Lecompte during the course of the incident. Lecompte was among several good Samaritans who tried to intervene in the carjacking.

Driggers now faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, two counts of attempted common law robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle, and felony fleeing to elude. He is currently being held without bond at the Robeson County Detention Center.

The tragic event began around 10:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of W. 5th Street, where the suspect was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run in the parking lot of Go Gas before attempting to carjack another vehicle in front of a McDonald’s restaurant on W. 5th Street.

According to police reports, good Samaritans stepped in to prevent the carjacking, but Driggers was able to steal a vehicle belonging to one of the individuals attempting to intervene. Unfortunately, in the process of fleeing in the stolen vehicle, Driggers struck Lecompte, resulting in the loss of life.

Authorities detailed that upon the arrival of officers at the scene, Driggers attempted to flee in the stolen vehicle, leading to a pursuit that ended in a crash on Selma Road near Highway 41. Further details surrounding the incident were not immediately available.
