Opelousas, Louisiana — A tragic case involving a young couple has emerged after their two-month-old daughter died from severe abuse, prompting murder charges against both parents. The incident has shocked the local community as authorities reveal the extent of the violence inflicted on the infant.
Taylor Daniel Broussard, 18, and Kaylee Fontenot, 20, face serious charges, including first-degree murder and cruelty to juveniles. The Opelousas Police Department received a call about a medical emergency on the night of October 25. When responders arrived at the residence on North Liberty Street, they found the baby unresponsive and started immediate lifesaving measures. However, the child was pronounced dead shortly after reaching the hospital.
An autopsy later revealed that the infant had suffered severe physical abuse, neglect, and internal injuries, including a severed lower spine and multiple rib fractures. Evidence indicated the child had been both dehydrated and malnourished. Authorities have confirmed that Broussard and Fontenot had provided care for the baby since her birth, raising alarming questions about her well-being during those critical months.
Following the initial discovery, investigators from the Opelousas Police Department’s Special Operations Division took Fontenot into custody after issuing warrants for both parents. In a concerted effort to locate Broussard, police initially sought assistance from the public. Broussard later turned himself in to authorities.
Both parents are now being held at the St. Landry Parish Jail, although their court dates have yet to be announced. This disturbing case has prompted an outpouring of grief and outrage, leading the local police chief to express sympathy for the infant. Chief Graig LeBlanc emphasized the importance of the investigation, urging the community to support law enforcement in their quest for justice.
As investigators continue their work, the Opelousas Police Department is asking anyone with relevant information to come forward. Tips can be shared directly with law enforcement or submitted anonymously through local crime-stopping services.
